Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is done to treat a damaged or decayed tooth.
- During the root canal process, the infected pulp is removed. The surfaces inside the tooth are then cleaned and disinfected, and a filling is placed to seal the space.
- Root canal treatment usually happens when a cavity is left untreated for a long time. It can also occur if your tooth becomes cracked or damaged due to trauma.
It usually involves 2-3 appointments depending on how infected the tooth is.
1st Appointment – Here we open the tooth and remove the infected pulp, after which a medicament is placed.
2nd Appointment – Cleaning, shaping and filling of the root canals, in case of severe infections the filling would be delayed for a 3rd appointment.
Ideally a root canal is always followed by a prosthetic crown as it protects the treated tooth which becomes weak ,brittle and prone to fracture.
Crowns are custom made, and fabrication usually takes 3 to 4 days. When your crown is ready the temporary filling is then replaced with permanent and the crown of choice is placed.
A crown helps restore the bite, withstand chewing forces and functions like a normal tooth.
